Why doesn't the USA watch European movies or movies from the UK, with a few exceptions like Harry Potter and some others. It seems American movies and TV shows are sent all over the world and watched. But Americans only watch American.|||To be honest I would like the think the reason is not that Americans dislike foreign films or hate subtitles (yes I know some people hate subtitles) but because the foreign films don't get the same exposure as mainstream American films do. It's easy to know which American films you want to watch because there are movie previews for them all the time. This is not the case for when foreign films are released, you have to do some research and try and hunt them down. I love foreign films but it's far more work to find them then it is to just go out and rent the latest American blockbuster. Actually this is also the case for some indie films, although I find that foreign is more difficult to find then indie in most cases.|||It's not that we don;t want to, but the distribution arm for many studios says otherwise|||they cant handle inteligent movies over there|||Not big on anime, huh?|||That's not entirely true - You do get a lot of our shows, though often 'convert' them after our producers sell the rights on. Plus, not trying to start anything but Americans often don't get English humour for example (we are a little odd....). Of course the final reason is a lot of our TV is utter b*llocks. The ones you do see will be the better ones...|||Primarily because we don't want to watch films with subtitles and we produce more than any other country and foreign films are just simply not as good.|||I believe it's because of the language barrier, Not a lot of Americans know more than one language, Where on the other hand theirs A LOT of Europeans that speak English!|||Most people like to see entertaining movies rather than "artistic" movies, and hollywood are almost the only ones that are making entertaining movies (a lot) along side artistic movies.
the rest of the world are making nice movies, but most of them are considered artistic and are not very enjoyable/entertaining to watch, thats why most of the people in the world, are watching more movies from hollywood than from other countries.|||Americans DO watch foreign films! Some that have been popular in the last few years:
Pan's Labyrinth
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Fearless
The Full Monty (British)
Atonement
|||The main reason is the studio cannot afford overseas marketing.
Its a money thing, not many Americans even hear about these movies until they are out for awhile. But to be honest , I prolly wouldnt see them anyway, I dont like reading my movies.|||I remember reading that when a study of american students was done they were asked about other countries out side of america some kids didn't even though these countries were there!!
I went to america and the amount of people asking me what type of house i had. ?? Of course I varied it day to day .. some days i lived in a normal house other days i lived in castles or crannogs!!
SOME Americans not all some are caught up in there only little country they don't realise alot of countries are out side of merica and we tend to function with out america|||What you you propose we "enjoy" Such riviting entertainment as "emmerdull, or perhaps "back enders" yeah Bore-nation street is a real hoot too.
I think the premise of your question is flawed. There are Americans who regularly watch Britcoms.
So....european soap operas = bad Britcoms = good|||Its really a cultural reason....America bore "hollywood" a long time ago, and there really was no comparison back in the day. As the years went by, we just became accustom to our own movies. I won't go so far as to say its not time for us to open our minds to foreign films, but we just have never been culturally exposed to their movies on a large scale. Its not like you CAN'T rent their films over here, you can. Its just that they still aren't popular. |||Do the name "Pan's Labyrinth" stike a familiar note? "The Queen?" "La Vita E Bella?" (Life Is Beautiful)
How about classics like "The 400 Blows" or "The Seven Samurai" or "Enemy at the Gates" or "The Wages of Fear" or "La Dolce Vita" or "81/2" or...
I think that some people do enjoy foreign films, but we have to seek out art houses and DVDs to see them in the original language - Americans HATE to read (subtitles).
