Is it just me or are American Movie critics really tough to get a good rating on movies?

Personally i think movie critics should leave the critiquing to the people and the fans of movies.|||I agree. They are waaayy too hard on movies. A lot of the time there's a movie that will get good reviews from the audience and fans but the critics will just destroy it. It might be because a lot of them can't watch movies purely for enjoyment anymore? A lot of my friends took film studies and analysis classes and after they said they can never watch movies the same way. They told me not to take that class.|||It depends. It's hard for comedy to capture the hearts of critics, because there's no real way of defining what's funny to you or what's funny to me, etc. Besides, they're looking for a story, and the heavier a film relies on the story, the less room there is for comedy, so EXCLUDING comedy flicks, here's my answer...

American critics are tough on movies because America releases many, many movies that suck each year. Good critics have guided me to view many great films I otherwise never would have seen. Sure, they get things wrong sometimes, but overall these are people who love movies, watch movies, and report how they feel about them. If you don't trust the critics, you don't have to listen to them. And, believe me, many people ignore critics in favor of the silly picture on the promotional ads/DVD packages, etc. Do you know how many rehash garbage films pop out of Hollywood's fat --- each year? If it weren't for the critics, the billboards and advertisements would be in charge, and the quality of movies would go down exponentially because there would be nobody to please. Some movies you might as well ignore, rather than waste your hard-earned money on them, and the critics help you sort that out.

That said, I don't believe critics are any better, or more knowlegable, than the average moviegoer -- those who really take what they see in front of them as an artform -- so, we all have potential to be a good critic to somebody. It just so happens that people like Roger Ebert get paid for what they do. More power to him, though. He's not a bad critic, to me.|||I heard from someone that critics gave really bad reviews to Star Wars when it came out, and yet it's now regarded by many to one of the greatest film series of all time.

So either they're really hard to please or they just kind of suck (although really, it's just their opinion. What really matters is how the audience thinks of the movie).|||It's the dumbest job ever. Think about the total dorks that become movie critics. Think about the retarded movies that get good ratings. They have dorks rating movies, so of course anyone that is not a complete loser is going to disagree with several/most of their reviews.|||I agree. Usually I know a movie will be good if all the critics hate it.
